how to not get doxxed: a shitty crash course in internet safety
a lot of people overshare online. hell, i do it myself. not every overshare-er has a caard with their home address and list of triggers, but go onto a random discord server (Terrible idea!) and nine times outta ten you'll see people sharing way too much info on themselves there.
this information, if found by the wrong people, can be used to dox you. even if you think you haven't posted "enough" information to dox yourself.
[there is no scenario in which publicly posting someone else's personal information is okay. if they're in danger or committing a crime, call the authorities, not your internet followers.]
so i've decided to make a short guide on how to avoid that as much as possible.
here are some simple things you can do right now:
change any profile pictures with your face on them to Literally Anything Else. even the default icon will work. that's your face. the thing people use to identify you at a glance.
if you've posted a trigger list, delete it right now. put that list into tumblr's filtered tags feature.
any location-based information (country and/or state, city, ect.) should be deleted, or edited to contain useless information.
Lie about this stuff. It is okay to lie about this. It is always morally correct to throw red herrings regarding your location or identity.
"what do you mean lie???"
lie about where you live. lie about who you are. the only people who would get mad at you about this are either people who want to dox you (block them), people who don't realize the first group exists, or people who think doxxing yourself is a show of trust (pro tip: this is just the first group with a "moral" coat of paint)
you could be a 40 year old chicken farmer in idaho. it doesn't have to make sense. it doesn't even have to be consistent. you could say you live in lithuania one day, then oregon the next, without any mention of "hey im moving :)" at all. the more misinformation you give regarding your location, the harder it is to figure out where the hell you are.
"isn't it better to just... not say anything?" well, if you haven't said anything, sure! if you *have* said anything, you could start being silent now... or you could start lying.
"ok, how do i lie?"
great question! i just make it up as i go along. you could go online, find a random country or state, and boom! that's where you grew up today. you could've been born in brazil one day, and ottowa the next. inconsistency is key! have fun with it! get creative!
have fun, homies!
